Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino 1997

We always must be thankful when we talk about Biondi Santi winery as it has been the inventor of one of the "BIG 3" wines of italy, the Lord Brunello di Montalcino! In the 1800s Sangiovese grape variety was believed to be the same grape growing in all Chianti area and either in Montalcino but Clemente Biondi-Santi in Montalcino believed that in its Greppo vineyard had another varietal as it was giving larger berries and more tannic wines and he called that as Brunello. He started to pick this grape earlier, ferment it solely (in contrary of chianti trend) and make it age like no others at that time. Since then Brunello di Montalcino was born and later on, however, they discover that Brunello is actually Sangiovese, or better is the best clone of Sangiovese called Sangiovese Grosso (Big sangiovese) for the reason of the larger berries that this clone gives.

87/100 @biondisantigreppo Brunello di Montalcino 1997

Maraschino cherry dried mushrooms forest floor wet tobacco leaf sweet dried raspberry and semi dried juicy strawberry

Med body

High acidity

Med firm tannins

High alcohol 13.5%

Med plus intensity

Long finish

The wine has a long lasting finish with still some fresh fruits on board. Body, acidity tannins and intensity are still like 22 years never passed. The wine is low outstanding as the complexity is far to be excellent but who the hell care when you have a Biondi Santi '97 in the glass???
