One of the first winery opened in Rioja after Marques de Riscal, Marques de Murrieta was Lopez de Hereida with its single vineyard Viña Tondonia in late 1800s. In Rioja after the Bordeaux invasion that made Rioja famous during the Philloxera epidemic, the region changed the style of making wine lower the yield on the field, making wine in more clean environment, shorten the ageing in oak, switching from American to French oak, and reduce to zero the oxidation. Modernist took this way, but Lopez de Hereida, along just few others, believed since the begin that the Rioja Tinto and expecially the Rioja Blanco has to age long in American oak and deliberating oxidation. LdH, in this way makes unique wines, proper Rioja to be proud of, with an incredible quality standard from its younger vineyard Viña Cubillo (that age 3 years in oak) up to the oldest Viña Tondonia (that age up to 7 years in oak) passing trough Viña Bosconia and Viña Gravonia. All of the wine are outstanding and with a quality for money that make all the super premium prized wines of the world be EMBARRASSED in comparison! LOPEZ DE HEREIDA is, for me, one of the top winery of this planet without any discussion! Who of you disagree???
